Flatwoven rugs

When we talk of flatwoven rugs, we can also say rugs without  pile, but in some cases in view of giving design we can make rugs, with some small pile at some places to give it designer look.

But plainly flatwoven rugs are flat rugs, without any pile. These are neither tufted, not knotted.

The warp is always of cotton with the weft in wool, to be weaved as per the design. This can be modern design, traditional design or kelim design.

In earlier times, these flatwoven rugs were mainly made with kelim pattern, but with the change of taste and design, the demand has shooted of contemporary designs too. Such beautiful design, with colour matching make these rugs looking very beautiful. These may be antique look, harsh feel, soft look and so on…

Handtufted carpets HW 350 and other qualties

What does codes of handtufted like HW 350, HW 450 HW 550 and so on indicates? These specifies the weight of yarn to be used per square yard or you can say the density part determination of any specific handtufted carpets or rugs.

Like HW.550 is around 88 oz per square yard. This means that the wool or other yarn density in the carpet is 88 oz in one square yard. The density of weaving is one more important thing in addition to the Quality of yarn being used in making handtufted carpets or rugs.

These issues seems to be normal, but always depends on the area where you have to use these kind of carpets. It is very important also to note the kind of canvas on which you are making these Handtufted carpets, by this we mean that the canvas weaving cloth much also have the capacity to tolerate the density of weaving otherwise in due course of use of carpets or rug, it may create big problems.

More the higher density of weaving, more the higher dense canvas tufted cloth. The other issue is the pile height of the carpets which also have relevancy with these codes of HW 450, 550 etc…

Today I take pleasure in sharing some of the terms used in handmade carpets and rugs. Being this very wide field, i will today share terms starting from alphabet "A"


Abrash : When a carpet or rug are made, in most of the carpet, change of colour can be seen, this change in the color of the rug due to a difference in the wool or dye batch or say change or variation in the color of a rug due to differences in the wool or dye bath. The effect of abrash is subtle shading differences. These happens mostly in case of carpets in which the wool being used are HANDSPUN wool.


Antique Wash : A washing technique to make rug look antique. These kind of washing make the rug look old, and faded.

Antique Reproduction : These are the rugs that are designed and washed in such a way to give antique look.We call this replicas of antique rugs.These time it is not possible to get may antique rugs, so we have technique of making them antique look. Area Rug : A center pc rug laid on floor is called area rug. These are normally 4x6, 5x8, 6x9 and so on. Area rug and rug both term mean one and the same. The dinning area rug, living room area rug, round rug, square rug, runner, all covers under area rugs.

Art Leather : Artificial leather, not real leather. These are very much in demand. However the cutting or the remaining of leather are being used in bulk for leather shaggy rug. Artificial Silk: A man-made fiber to resemble silk, very durable; other names used are rayon and viscose. It is soft to the touch and more affordable than the expensive silk originals . All-Over Design : A pattern which is repeated throughout the field. No central medallion is present or to be more clear Rug pattern that is consistent throughout the field of the rug; not featuring a central medallion or border. A herati pattern is a good example for an all-over design area rugs.


Aubuson : We call this a design. Aubuson design. Fine flat carpets woven in France from the 15th to 19th Centuries. They were derived from Moorish weaving with the assistance of Architects and Artists of the royal court. A center of French carpet production which began in the mid 17th century. Many tapestry woven rugs were woven in the 18th and 19th centuries and generally those have designs of flowers and bouquets and architectural motifs. These are maninly made in handknotted pattern, but these times are also being made in handtufted.Term may also be called as abusan design handknotted rug, or abusan design handtufted rugs.

Care and Cleaning of Original silk carpets and rugs

Silk carpets being the most expensive carpets, we make in India. Did you ever thought how these silk carpets are cleaned and taken care of?

Silk rugs or say silk carpets are made from silk harvested from the cocoons of silk worms. Yes, don’t get surprise and because of this please treat it properly to ensure you do not damage the soft fibers.

1. Turn the rug down from backside, so that the front portion of the rug is down. Beat slowly the back side of silk rug with the broom handle, this has impact that it loosens the dirt caught inside the silk fibers, making it easier to remove when vacuuming. Warning!!! Please do not beat the top side of the rug, as you may damage delicate silk threads.

2 Though its not necessary but you should try to vacuum a silk rug twice a week to remove dust and dirt that falls into the rug's fibers. Please ensure to use a sweeper attachment to clean the rug.

3 . When any liquid is fallen on silk carpets, Blot the rug with a white cloth or paper towel, until all liquid is removed.

4 . After all liquid is removed or say soaked, dab the club soda onto the stain, working from outside the stain toward the inside. If this is not convenient for you, you may also mix one part white vinegar and one part water and apply this to the stain, continue blotting until the stain is removed.

5. Dry the damp area with a hair dryer or leave a fan running on the rug until the area is dry, try to avoid sunlight.

6. When you do not want to use the silk rugs store a silk rug by rolling it up with the fuzzy side on the outside. Use the sheet to cover, the roll to avoid any dust.

Poly mat, polyprolene mat, chatai all are one and the same thing. Earlier these kind of mats were made of natural straws, but now these are being made with Polyproplene straws.

These kind of mats are made in 2 different pattersns : one is carpet weave polyproplene mats other is check weave pattern.

Carpet weave are mostly advisable for oriental or say traditional designs, as against the cheque weave which are made mosttly for modern or me perfecly ay geomterical designs.

The sizes most popularly made are 3x6, 4x6, 5x7, 6x6, 6x9, 8x12, 9x12. All are in fts.
